When I try to start speech recognition and say "Start listening", I have to say it multiple times before it start listening. What can I do to correct this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have Windows 7.

Is accuracy good once the microphone is activated?

I had this problem as well.  It seems the Windows Speech Recognition in Windows Vista had too easy of a "start listening" activation (it would often wake up saying just about anything) and Microsoft has attempted to fix this issue with later versions of Windows.

I had a hard time having my new PC with Windows 8.1 start listening to me after a fresh training and had to say it just the right way (sometimes multiple times) for it to activate.  While I don't really have the problem anymore, mainly because the toolkit allowed me to transfer over my old speech files over to the new PC so now I just say it once and it doesn't even come on accidentally anymore, I'm not sure if there is a fix for a new file.  You could try adding the phrase to the speech dictionary but it may just require some extra training.

Try running the microphone setup utility whenever you are having a problem. Also, if you're using a USB or analog microphone, make sure you connect to a rear port. Connecting to front ports can sometimes be problematical as the ports are connected to the rear by cables that can pick up electronics static that will distort your audio signal. To test this, use windows sound recorder to record a 10 second recording of your voice. Listen to the playback. It should be free of any electronic noise.

I'm using a USB soundcard with the Boom O microphone on a notebook PC. My old laptop actually didn't need the USB soundcard.  The internal one worked really well for some reason.  It was a miracle machine.  lol

Questions:
1. Have you always had this problem?
2. Are you enunciating clearly (feeling your lips form the words)?
3. Are you getting otherwise good accuracy?
4. What microphone are you using?
5. Do you have this problem even after starting Windows and Windows Speech Recognition?

Answers to the above may help narrow down the problem.
