Currently Using WSR 8.0 that comes with Win7 64bit. I like it and I have also implemented Vocola with it.

the only annoyance i have NOT figured out is how to stop WSR from dictating EVERY sound...

If i russle some paper work, if produces the dialog box with random words...
If I tap on my desk with a pen, it thinks i am saying something and produces the text or dialogue box..
even banging on the keyboard (yes i still do) produces a sound that WSR tries to pick up as speech.

very annoying...

Some ideas I had.. create a script (don't know how or with what) that only produces dication if mouse is in Text Box
OR, if i can say some words ONLY when I need to to change into dictation mode... maybe there is a 3rd party app, because I have not seen any settings to help

so if anyone can help with this inconvience I would appreciate it..

There are likely two reasons for the problem you are having, words being placed on screen unintentionally.
1. The microphone you are using has no noise canceling capability and is picking up stray sounds as words. WSR requires not only the highest quality audio input for good accuracy, the microphone must be truly noise canceling to eliminate background noises from distorting the audio signal or causing stray words. Many microphones claim to be noise canceling, but in fact are not. The ones you find on our website have been tested and the ones with good noise canceling state this fact on the web pages.

2. The other problem is that WSR has poor control of the audio sound subsystem built into Windows. We noticed this problem over two years ago when the audio level was constantly resetting itself. If the audio pickup level is too sensitive, even with a good noise canceling microphone, stray words will appear unintentionally. When we updated our very popular WSRToolkit from version one to version two, we included the Tune Microphone feature. This allows you to not only set the volume control but also the SNR (signal to noise ratio). Once this has been set, as long as you do not run the Microsoft microphone setup, the setting you have determined to be best will stay set.

The WSRToolkit is very reasonably priced at $25.99. It has over 10 features that make working with WSR easy and more like the more mature Dragon NaturallySpeaking product. Some of the most popular features include an easy macro creation wizard that allows you to create text macros easily and command and control macros easily. There are also accuracy enhancing features that will take into account your unique way of pronouncing words as well as the ability to add documents typical to the style and word usage typical of your own dictation. thanks for the reply and information.

I am currently using a Buddy Flamingo Mic, supposed to be very good for speech and has built in NC..

if i go to Speech Properties and view the "Level" at the bottom (Microphone) and start to speak, the green bar only goes up a bit...

I have also done a recording, and it seems very normal to me....  If you like I can send you the recorded file of a couple of sec of audio...

So i assume there is ZERO way to turn on/off  "dictation mode" and avoid this??

Did you notice in the previous post, "Many microphones claim to be noise canceling, but in fact are not." eMicrophones via our web site have been providing microphones for speech recognition software (IBM, Dragon, L&H, and WSR) for 15 years. We think the Buddy Flamingo is highly practical for use with a Notebook Computer, but ONLY IN A QUIET ENVIRONMENT. The simple fact of this has to do with the laws of physics. The further a microphone is from your mouth, the stronger the pickup signal must be to hear you. This stronger signal will also pickup every stray sound, even keyboard clicks, in the environment. Anyone who tells you different is selling you a bill of goods. The noise canceling in the Buddy microphones uses a DSP (digital signal processor) to eliminate machine type noises like vacuum cleaners, air conditioner and vent blowers etc.

This feature (command or number mode) is only available in Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Jon,

The accuracy problem you are describing (random words appearing), is this something new or did you always have this problem?

It's probably a good idea to get into the habit of using the command "Stop Listening" whenever there is a pause in your dictation. In that way, the microphone isn't listening to anything.

This is an excellent suggestion to avoid stray words from appearing. For those who have use of their hands, the microphone can be controlled by the keyboard. Holding the Ctrl key and tapping the left Window key next to the Ctrl key works like a toggle to turn the microphone off and on.
