How exactly do I use Speech Recognition? I am an experienced computer user but guides don't help me with this.

I go to control panel. I click Speech Recognition Options. What I get:

On left, in a blue/green area, it says "Text to Speech" on top. This is not what I'm looking for. On bottom, it says:
"See also"
"Ease of Access"
"Audio Devices"

Obviously these are not what I'm looking for either.

On the right side, I got this large white area:
Configure your Speech Recognition experience

If you would like to learn more about speech related tools and support from Microsoft, please visit Microsoft Speech Online Community.

That's all there is. I want to use speech macros that I downloaded and installed. However, they don't work because Speech Recognition is not properly configured or something.

So what do I need to do to make it work? Are there some alternatives?

ediiiiiit: Windows Vista 32 Premium, I got a headset and microphone works. I have recorded stuff with the recorder that came with windows.

You should get the screen below and just click Start Speech Recognition. If you've never used WSR previously it should have you create a User Profile by reading some text and learning your voice.

There are lots of headsets out there. Do you have one made for speech recognition? This means designed to work in the range of the human voice and with good noise canceling. Many manufacturers say their microphones are noise canceling but are not.

At the top of the MSSpeech Forum home page is a link, READ "Getting Started with Windows Speech Recognition." We suggest you read this.

Wormat,

I am on a Vista Pro 32 bit now and the screen in our previous is message is the only screen we see. As a matter of fact, since 2006 using WSR we have only seen this screen. You should try another computer to see if this is the same?

Can't try another one. Anyway, I'm already pretty sure that something is wrong. From guides and such, it seemed to be super easy to make it work.

I tried many other programs that use SAPI (5.3?) and they don't work.

You need to re-install Windows. Better yet, upgrade to Windows 7.

That's too much for too little. Also, I'll skip 7 and get 8.
